Fav 5: Books to Encourage Personal Growth

books on personal growth

Non-fiction books on the human experience have become my cup of tea since the start of 2022 (I began some pivotal shift upon turning 29). In this respect, I have begun compiling a list of books both read and unread (the latter being much longer) that I believe others would enjoy as well.

It’s a continuous cycle as I sometimes find myself consuming two or three books at a time, pondering how one day I would love to write and publish my very own book(s)!

These five I share with you have personally inspired and helped me on my journey of self-discovery since turning 29. This list is by no means finite as I could spew out about twenty other books on this topic alone. However, it’s a digestible introduction to the world of self-growth and personal development within the framework of spirituality and psychology.

*I present these five personal growth books in no particular order of favouritism.

1. Monk in Training

Think like a Monk: Train your Mind for Peace and Purpose / Jay Shetty

A former monk turned life coach and podcaster – Jay is becoming many Millennials’ favourite spiritual leader and mentor. In his first book, he shares the wisdom and teachings he learned during his days as a monk and relays it back into practical modern-day advice. The main message of this book – find your purpose aka your Dharma!

2. One Read at a Time

101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think / Brianna Wiest

This book feels like 1001 guidances in being human! Brianna writes with such sageness and ease causing one light-bulb moment after the next. What I enjoy about this book is that it is not written in a chronological sequence meaning you can flip through the book from one essay to the next in any order you please.

3. Wizardly Wisdom

The Way of the Wizard: 20 Spiritual Lessons for Creating the Life You Want / Deepak Chopra

The Grand-Daddy of personal development and spiritual enlightenment, Deepak has written countless books in this field. This book is captured playfully in a teacher-to-student dialogue between Merlin the Wizard and a young Arthur. Topics include the transformation of self-limitations, achieving love, fulfilment and connection.

4. Easy Yet Impactful

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom / Don Miguel Ruiz

A short yet insightful read. The four agreements receives its foundation from the ancient Toltec wisdom. Think of it as a simple handbook for a greater life – use your words intentionally, don’t take anything personally, avoid making assumptions, and always do your best. The author dives into and unpacks each agreement so one can apply it in their daily life.

5. The Classic

The Alchemist / Paulo Coelho

A timeless classic. I first read this book when I was 24 and did not understand its significance. Six years and many life lessons later I re-read this book from an entirely different angle and appreciation. This book is in fact fiction yet the story is crafted in such a way that the reader is edged into an epiphany concerning our hearts and dreams and the importance of following both.

P.S. Please consider buying used or from independent bookstores.

Thanks for reading!
