Replace your New Years Resolutions with these 7 Intentions Instead

Happy 2024!!

As another New Year begins, many of us will find ourselves making the same old resolutions, only to abandon them a few weeks later. But what if I told you that there is a better way to kick off the year and set yourself up for success? Instead of traditional resolutions that often fall by the wayside, why not focus on a few mindful actions that will truly make a difference in your life?

In this article, we’ll explore seven things you can do to create lasting change and make the most out of the new year. So ditch the outdated resolutions in place of a more effective approach to achieving your goals and living a life of authenticity and intention.

  1. make your bed each morning
I know how mundane this may seem however, making your bed upon rising is a small yet peaceful ritual. It shows appreciation for your resting nest, mindfulness in the actual act and completes the first task of the day. Plus, there is a noticeable difference between walking into a room where a bed has been made vs. unmade.
  2. swap resolutions with reflections
what are things you experienced or accomplished last year that made you feel proud? Or inspired to go out of your comfort zone? What moments, people and places made 2023 the year that it was and how might you be able to incorporate that into the new year?
  3. implement something healthy into your daily routine
10 minutes of yoga each morning, drinking one less cup of coffee in favour of green tea, reading at bedtime instead of scrolling on social media, or writing one gratitude sentence a day in your journal.
  4. choose a word of the year
or two or three like I did! A word(s) of the year is a simple yet effective way of setting the tone and intention for the new year. It acts as an affirmation that benefits our mental health and well-being.
  5. create a vision board
a fun activity that can easily be done via Pinterest or Instagram under the saved tab. Find images that evoke feelings, inspirations, and experiences you desire to call in for 2024. At the end of the year go back and see how many came true!
  6. write a list of things you’re looking forward to
In German, we have a saying, “Vorfreude ist die schönste Freude” which translates to pre-excitement is the best excitement. Write down every little and big thing you are excited about for 2024! Also, my nerdy side would like to add that lists are easy to write yet impactful in the process.
  7. practice gratitude each day
when we move through the motions of our everyday life including the habits we perform on autopilot it can become blurry to see all the things we are blessed with. Examples include keeping a gratitude journal (see #3), being fully present, or finding a new sense of enjoyment in the familiar.
